Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Phaya Thai area and the passing trains, there is a quiet cultural oasis hidden away. That is "Suan Pakkad Palace Museum," the former residence of Major General Prince Chumbhotbongs Paribatra, Prince of Nakhon Sawan Sakdipinit, and his consort, Mom Rajawongse Pantip Paribatra. The name "Suan Pakkad" comes from the original area that used to be a Chinese vegetable garden before the two of them renovated it into a palace lush with plants and traditional Thai houses.
A highlight not to be missed when visiting is "The Lacquer Pavilion," which is one of the most beautiful late Ayutthaya-style teak architectures in Thailand. Inside, it is decorated with exquisite gold leaf patterns telling the stories of the Buddha's life and Ramakien. There are also 8 traditional Thai houses displaying valuable antiques, including Ban Chiang pottery and personal artifacts. Currently, Suan Pakkad Palace is under the care of the "Chumbhot - Pantip Foundation," which continues to preserve this cultural heritage perfectly for future generations to study.
For visits, Suan Pakkad Palace Museum is open daily from 09:00 AM - 4:00 PM. The admission fee is 50 baht for Thais and 100 baht for foreigners (please check for updated prices at the ticket counter). It is a very worthwhile price to soak in the atmosphere of the lush greenery and world-class art in this historical area.
Spending a short holiday at Suan Pakkad Palace will help fill the hearts of those who are passionate about Thai art and history. Whether you stroll through the garden or explore each Thai house, you are guaranteed to get inspiration and beautiful pictures to take back as souvenirs.
