Pom Phet, the Iron Fortress of Ayutthaya: A Waterfront Viewpoint and the Most Beautiful Check-in Spot in Ayutthaya. When it comes to ancient sites in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, many people may think of old temples. But did you know that there is a "fortress" that still maintains its elegance and was an important strategic point in the past? That is Pom Phet, a place that combines both rich history and the beauty of the Chao Phraya River scenery perfectly.
Get to know "Pom Phet," the fortress that never breaks. Pom Phet was built during the reign of King Maha Chakkraphat (around 2100 B.E.) as a fortress to defend the city from waterborne invasions. It is located at the most important geographical point, which is "Bang Kacha," where the Pa Sak River and the Chao Phraya River meet.
During the Ayutthaya period, this fortress was like the first gateway that cargo ships from foreign countries and warships had to pass through. The strength of the fortress, built with bricks alternating with laterite up to 6.5 meters thick, made Pom Phet one of the 29 fortresses around the city walls that have survived to this day.
Highlights not to be missed when visiting: Classic Architecture: The fortress has an octagonal shape with slots for placing cannons. If you look closely, you will see traces of very delicate and strong construction.
Two Rivers Viewpoint: Because it is the meeting point of two rivers, we will see the waterfront lifestyle, large cargo ships passing by, and Wat Phanan Choeng Worawihan clearly visible on the opposite side. The most recommended time is from 5:00 PM onwards because this place is one of the top sunset viewing spots in Ayutthaya. The orange light that hits the old bricks and the water surface gives a romantic and peaceful atmosphere.
