If you have ever visited Wat Umong behind Chiang Mai University, which is famous for its underground tunnels, you should not miss the opportunity to get to know its sister temple with a closely linked history in the heart of Chiang Mai's old city, "Wat Umong Maha Therachan," or as Chiang Mai people call it, "Wat Umong In Wiang," a place full of peace and valuable cultural traces.
History: This temple was built during the Mangrai dynasty and is deeply connected to "Phra Maha Therachan," a monk who was knowledgeable in Dharma and played an important role in that era. According to legend, Phaya Kue Na built a tunnel at Wat Suan Phuttham (behind Chiang Mai University) to offer to Phra Maha Therachan, but at the same time, he also resided and practiced Dharma at this temple in the city. As a result, his name was used to name the temple in honor and remembrance of his faith.
The outstanding architecture of Wat Umong Maha Therachan is the beautiful Lanna-style "Viharn" (hall). The gable is intricately carved. Inside, there is a Buddha image with a delicate Buddha image reflecting the golden age of Chiang Mai art. Although there is no large underground tunnel like the temple behind Chiang Mai University, the atmosphere is strangely peaceful, as if time has stopped spinning, allowing us to spend time contemplating Dharma amidst the chaos of the city.
Visiting Wat Umong Maha Therachan on this holiday is like completing a missing piece of Chiang Mai's history. It is a suitable location for history tourists and those who want peace of mind. It is easy to travel to because it is located on Ratchaphakhinai Road, not far from Wat Chedi Luang. It is a pleasure to experience the essence of Lanna in a different perspective.
