Chachoengsao City Museum, travel to Paet Riu, retracing the past of the rice bowl city, Prachinburi Province. (Not) far to Chachoengsao Province. Everyone rushes to pay respect to Luang Pho Sothon for good fortune first. Yes, before searching for delicious food to eat with great pleasure in Thailand, where everywhere you go, there is only delicious food to eat. Once full, they are about to drive back home.

But, uh-oh, sookjai Weekend wants to say, stay with us first, don't go yet...!

Stay first, and we will take you to visit the Chachoengsao City Museum or the residence of Krommuen Maruphong Siriphat. Let me tell you in advance that this residence was once used as the residence of the commissioner of the Prachinburi Province, since the time when Siam was still governed under the Monthol Thesaphiban system.

The age of the residence is about 100 years old.

In addition, it was also the residence of King Chulalongkorn, King Rama V, twice, as well as King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Rama IX, Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, and Princess Sirindhorn, who all resided at this palace by the Bang Pakong River when they visited Chachoengsao.

The residence of Krommuen Maruphong Siriphat (or Major General Prince Krom Khun Maruphong Siriphat, who was a prince in the reign of King Rama IV, played a significant role in the civil service of Siam, and was once the ambassador to Paris, Rome, Madrid, and Lisbon) is a 2-story wooden house, painted in light green alternating with dark gray, with openings to receive wind in the style of old wooden houses. The inside of the house is airy and comfortable, and it is also located next to the Bang Pakong River, which is pleasing to the eye and mind. Currently, it is a place for exhibitions providing knowledge about Chachoengsao Province, which, if not told, would not know that it was once important enough to be a rice bowl city and a front-line city of Ayutthaya.

Because, according to the hypothesis, Chachoengsao may have prospered since the Sukhothai period.

King Mongkut, King Rama IV, had a royal opinion on the name of the city, Chachoengsao, that it was a Khmer word, while the name of the city, Paet Riu, he saw as a Thai name. Historians in later eras also shared the same opinion, stating that it was distorted from the words Stung Treng or Chathraengtra, meaning deep canal, according to the characteristics of the Bang Pakong River.

As for the name Paet Riu, there are many local stories.

Some say that it is because of the abundance of the Bang Pakong River, which resulted in large snakehead fish that had to be filleted into 8 slices to fillet the whole fish.

Some say that it is distorted from the word Pae Lee, which means a city of a hundred li, because the Sothon Temple community, where Chinese people came to trade, is about one hundred li from the mouth of the bay.

The most credible hypothesis says that it is a name from the Panyasa Jataka (Jataka outside the Tripitaka, outside the Sangayana, popular in Lanna and Laos), which is the story of Phra Rot-Meri, which mentions the event of the giantess killing the twelve daughters and dissecting the bodies of the twelve daughters into eight slices (Oh, it's more brutal than Jack the Ripper).

There is confirmation because in the Phanat Nikhom area (Chonburi Province, a nearby area), it has been the residence of the Vientiane people since the reign of King Rama III. The Lao people call the areas that originally existed according to the names in the Phra Rot Meri Jataka, whether it is Phra Rot City, the Cave of the Twelve Daughters, or the Chicken Well of Phra Rot, etc.

Which version you choose to believe, please use your discretion to consider as you like.

The exhibition informs about the importance of the city of Chachoengsao, that in the era of King Trailokanat of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, Chachoengsao was an inner city near the capital of the country, with the city ruler holding the rank of Khun Phra, which is Phra Wiset Ruechai. Until the era of King Naresuan, Chachoengsao still played a role as a rice bowl and a place to gather troops, as well as a source of supplies for the royal army in the battle of Lovek to bring the Thai people back.

The city ruler of Chachoengsao was promoted to Phraya Wiset Ruechai at this time.

In the era of King Taksin the Great, when he was Phraya Wachiraprakarn, he used Chachoengsao as a route for the army, and clashed with the Burmese soldiers at Pak Nam Cho Lo, Bang Khla District. He defeated the Burmese army.

When it came to the reign of King Nangklao, King Rama III, he ordered the relocation of Chachoengsao to be close to the Bang Pakong River. He built walls and fortresses to protect the mouth of the river, turning it into a Khuean Khan city (a city to protect against invasion from enemies), with Krom Luang Rak Ronnaret as the key person.

In the reign of King Rama V, after the change of government from Chatur Sadom to Monthol Thesaphiban, he had a royal idea that Chachoengsao was a city that would have a train passing through, with more government work than other cities. Chachoengsao became the location of the Prachin Province office, which was formed by combining the cities along the Bang Pakong River together, with Major General Phraya Ritthirong Ronnachet (Suk Chuto) as the first commander of Prachin Province, to be called briefly as Khaluang Thesaphiban, and later changed the name of the position of the commander of the province to Samuha Thesaphiban in the reign of King Rama VI.

It can be said that our Chachoengsao is an important regional center.

Later, Chonburi, Phanat Nikhom, and Bang Lamung were combined with Prachinburi Province, with Chachoengsao as the center of all government work.

For important events that occurred in Chachoengsao, there are also displays of old photographs of various events, whether it is the route of the visit to Chachoengsao by King Chulalongkorn, King Rama V, or the event when the Prachin Province Hall (the old city hall) caught fire, a procession of pulling Phra Phutthasothon on land, with elephants participating in the procession. Another very interesting event is the event of the Angyee seizing the walls of Chachoengsao, which is said that the suppression of the Angyee gang robbing and killing the owner of the sugarcane factory and killing the city ruler of Chachoengsao at that time caused the Bang Pakong River to turn red with the blood from the bodies of the Angyee who were thrown into the river.

For contemporary events, such as the floating of sandalwood flowers in front of Luang Pho Sothon Temple when King Rama IX passed away, or the ceremony of collecting water from the sacred water source at Pak Nam Cho Lo, Pak Nam Subdistrict, Bang Khla District, to be used as holy water (collecting water from sacred water sources throughout the country) during the coronation ceremony of King Rama X, there are also photographs on display.
