The Sad Ban Nam Khem Memorial, In Memory of the 2004 Tsunami Event. If you remember the tsunami 20 years ago, which became a movie about a family that had to be a victim in Thailand. The film may end happily at the end. But in reality, it's not like in the movies.
Ban Nam Khem is now a seaside village suitable for relaxation. There are seafood restaurants all along the beach. There are not many tourists, except on weekends when locals like to relax. On the beach there is a Mara Vichai Buddha image and a statue of Prince Chumphon Khet Udomsak. The beach is decorated with a little stucco work. Next to the beach is the Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial. And further out there is also the Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Museum.
After the tsunami disaster, Ban Nam Khem was the most damaged community. 1 in 4 residents out of 4,200 people died from the incident, some of whom were children in the village. The survivors lost everything. Even the houses were destroyed. The whole village had to be repaired or rebuilt. It is a sad story, as were the tourists who lost their lives in the incident.
The memorial is full of the names of the dead, both Thais and tourists from many countries. They used this memorial to record their names together for the last time. Even though it has been a long time, the atmosphere is still sad. It's hard to forget.
On a cloudy day, sookjai holiday, mourn all the souls that reside in Ban Nam Khem, the origin of the tsunami warning system that creates safety for everyone today.
