If you want to experience the prosperity of Ayutthaya as the second capital, you must not miss visiting "Narai Ratchaniwet Palace," or what Lopburi people call Wang Narai. This place was built to be the residence of King Narai the Great. The highlight is the Thai-Western architecture, where we will see arches and walls with lanterns for placing thousands of lamps, beautifully arranged, especially during the King Narai Festival when tourists often wear Thai costumes to take pictures.
The main highlight is the "Somdet Phra Narai National Museum," located within the palace area. It is a collection of masterpieces from the prehistoric era to the reign of King Narai, including the display of utensils in the way of life of ancient Lopburi people.
In addition to the Phra Chao Hao Building and the Twelve Treasury Buildings inside the palace, if you walk around to the back of the palace (outside Wang Narai), there are dozens of ancient steps sloping down to the river, called Tha Khun Nang (Noblemen's Pier). It doesn't take much time to stop by and take some pictures.
Narai Ratchaniwet Palace also hosts the Wang Narai Festival every year. You can ask the hotel to rent a Thai dress to wear and walk around the "Wang Fair" at that time. There will be many shops in the city that rent Thai dresses specifically for the event.
Walking around Wang Narai on a holiday will make you feel peaceful and happy amidst the big trees and valuable palace walls. It is recommended to come in the late afternoon to see the cool light falling on the laterite floor, which will make your photos look more sacred and powerful. After visiting the palace, you can also walk to Phra Prang Khaek or Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat, which are nearby. It is a one-day trip that will help replenish your energy and knowledge.
